Wellness tool box.
Welcome to my very intentional rant on why I use so many tools with my self care routines. If you catch yourself rushing through your morning or night routine, this is a great way to become more mindful while tending to YOU. There are 24 hours in a day. Your mind and body will always thank you for taking a few extra minutes to connect with it. The tools I’m sharing here are especially beneficial to the scalp, skin and lymphatic drainage system. If you don’t already know, this is the system that carries waste away from the tissues and back to the heart. Most people typically don’t pay much attention to their lymphatic system unless they’re sick, however, this is something that has absolutely been proven to help prevent illness and flush toxins. So why wouldn’t you want to pay attention to it?!
I have been obsessed with holistic wellness and self care since my early teens. Always carrying around essential oils and leaning on peppermint to take away cramps, migraines, PMS, and quite literally every symptom. I joke about being an “aliment queen” and always having natural remedies on me just incase.
I remember the first week of living in Phoenix, I hadn’t started my job yet, I had just moved and my stuff was everywhere. I had nothing around me that looked or felt familiar except my self care routine. When it came time to get ready for bed I would surely feel like me again. This is when I realized my nightly routine made me feel “at home” no matter where I was.
Now this doesn’t mean I am perfectly consistent with all of my rituals all the time. I'm human. But I learned quickly that the more consistent I am, the better I feel.
When it comes to tools, I suggest slowly adding to your tool box, don’t let this list make you feel the need to immediately purchase every item. Instead, start by slowly incorporating a few and getting really consistent while noticing the positive benefits. Once you feel ready to take on another, add it! Here it goes!
First on the list:
Silicone Body and Face Scrubber. Throw your loofa away and order this one ASAP. It has changed the feeling of clean for me. First of all, loofas carry so much bacteria and feel clean for a very short amount of time. Since these scrubbies are made of silicone, they can be washed and sanitized so easily! Second, the way these little bristles feel on the skin… so amazing! I suggest getting a separate one for your face linked here. Since using this consistently I’ve noticed my face has felt and looked so much cleaner. Wash cloths do not even compare! I even got one for my boyfriend and every time he takes a shower he says it blows his mind how good his face and body feels!
Wooden Comb for Scalp I absolutely love this little wooden comb. It feels so nice with or without the use of scalp oil. This is a great way to add some stimulation to your scalp if you’re trying to grow your hair. It’s also a lovely way to relieve stress and comb the hair at the same time. With gentle pressure, begin at the hairline and work your way back to the base of the neck. You can massage the neck with the comb as well.
Rubber Scalp Scrubber If you’re not scrubbing your scalp when you wash your hair, please do yourself a huge favor and purchase this gem of a tool. So easy to use, this scrubber is something I have in the studio to use on my clients and in my shower. It’s so easy to sanitize. It feels so good on the scalp and it is exfoliating AF!
Dry Brush for Body and Face. I’ve been dry brushing on and off for many years but consistently since moving to the desert. I suggest doing this 3-4 times a week but the more consistent you are, the better! This tool is so helpful for dry skin and also increasing blood circulation with aids in lymphatic drainage and detox. As we know, the skin is the largest organ in the body. Keeping it deeply cleaned, hydrated and exfoliated positively affects our overall health. It may take a bit to get used to as the bristles aren’t usually super soft. The best way to use this would be right before you take a shower. Moving up the legs in a circular motion, up the arms, down the stomach and down the torso. Also reaching to your back and dry brushing for exfoliation.
Castor Oil Pack for Liver and Detox. I’ve been using a castor oil pack for last 6 months and I don’t plan to stop. I especially like to use it during my luteal phase but it is definitely beneficial any time. You can wear it for 30-60 minutes or overnight. I heard for a while that castor oil packs were really helpful for endometriosis so I figured I’d give it a try. I am blessed with really terrible menstrual cycles due to endo and I’ll literally do anything to try and calm it. So far I have noticed it really helps my stomach to feel relaxed. I like to apply my heating pad on top and allow the castor oil to really sink in. I usually fall asleep with it on and take it off at some point in the night. Aside from it helping with endometriosis and relaxation, it is also known to encourage liver detox, reduce gut inflammation, and help to balance hormones. 100% worth buying this easy wrap. I was using a piece of flannel with castor oil before buying this but it slipped all around and made my clothes oily.
Jade Stone or Metal Gua Sha I’ll never stop talking about how much I love to Gua Sha my face. I am not into injections at this point in my life so this is how I tend to my cheek bones and facial structure the natural way. Not only does this help define your cheek bones and jaw but it’s also a very helpful tool for TMJ. You can use it to massage the masseter muscle which causes jaw pain and migraines. I also use my Gua Sha to relieve sinus pressure. Beginning by pressing along the collar bone to activate the lymph nodes, then work your way onto your face. Moving the stone from the inside of the nose and eye, outward toward the ear. (I'll share a video on my exact routine soon since it’s a little challenging to put into words.)
De La Heart Drainage Paddle This tool is so amazing for tightening the appearance of your skin and it also erases puffiness in the body. This tool is a little interesting to learn how to use but once you get it, you won’t want to stop using it! You’ll want to use this with a body oil or lotion after dry brushing and showering. I purchased this tool back in 2019 and it took me a while to start using it consistently. When you’re using it regularly, you will absolutely notice a difference. There are a few videos on their website about how to use. Just remember, Up the legs, up the arms, down the stomach, down the torso.
I hope you learned something from this post! Never hesitate to reach out with questions. XO
